First up is a prime, underrated example of what "acting at the edges" really means in a movie -- especially an ensamble -- and how a small, cipherish role can be milked for all its worth and used for the highest effect possible. This exciting scenerio can be found in the nominated performance given by...<br /><div style="text-align: left;"><img border="0" height="272" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rcUuB3TrU68/UH3PYCNCuPI/AAAAAAAAE4c/PN4_RXT7DYk/s400/queen.jpg" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">...<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Latifah">Queen Latifah</a> in<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_(2002_film)"> <em>Chicago</em></a> </span><span style="font-size: small;">(2002)</span></div>Queen Latifah plays Matron "Mama" Morton, the mistress/matron of murderess' row in a woman's prison in 1920s Chicago, where newest prisoner Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger, simply luminous in her underrated performance) has been placed under Mama's watchful eye after killing her lover in cold blood.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RtGxYS4Yg5k/UH5L8rl3knI/AAAAAAAAE5E/Qx-IuL5StQk/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h09m49s87.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RtGxYS4Yg5k/UH5L8rl3knI/AAAAAAAAE5E/Qx-IuL5StQk/s400/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h09m49s87.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Latifah's Mama acts as simply that for the fresh batch of ladies coming into the cold life of prison -- a seemingly protective, caring mother figure who plays a simple game of tit for tat; or in her bold words, "<em><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoDS1lWdpjw">When Your Good To Mama, Mama's Good To You</a></em>". In her intro and only show-stopping number, Latifah's Mama -- in Roxie's (or the movie's?) imagination -- delivers this saucy bit of good advice to the adoring audience. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vg-KakzYRL0/UH5OzlV51sI/AAAAAAAAE5s/LiCbX_0uB7Y/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h16m05s11.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vg-KakzYRL0/UH5OzlV51sI/AAAAAAAAE5s/LiCbX_0uB7Y/s400/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h16m05s11.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Latifah performs the number with compelling, toe-tapping zest and appealing verve. Her Mama can be your best companion or your worst enemy, and it rests on the shoulders of the individual, in this case Roxie. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rav4dJnHeoQ/UH5RfGNHOOI/AAAAAAAAE6U/yk7T_dPQgCI/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h17m03s84.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rav4dJnHeoQ/UH5RfGNHOOI/AAAAAAAAE6U/yk7T_dPQgCI/s400/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h17m03s84.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Latifah's Mama immediately takes a special interest in Roxie's innocent nature and reassures her that Mama is here to take care of her and can act as her bridge to the world outside if she plays her cards right within her inside home. Mama also has an on going "bond" with Roxie's fellow prisoner Velma Kelly, who knows how to work her way into Mama's good graces any time she wants, if only for a discounted price.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-00oHqqwLfvA/UH7WWOAzpBI/AAAAAAAAE68/fC2Y4J2kU9A/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h20m09s153.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-00oHqqwLfvA/UH7WWOAzpBI/AAAAAAAAE68/fC2Y4J2kU9A/s400/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h20m09s153.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The odd affection she shows for Velma is caught onto Roxie, and Latifah's Mama sees Roxie as both a means of hustling her way to some extra cash (including a phone call for $100) and maintaining her formidable reputation as the true countess of the clink. As with Velma, Latifah's Mama says she'll put in a good word to get top lawyer Billy Flynn (the horrible Richard Gere, horribly miscast) to represent Roxie in court, and with him she has a very high chance of winning.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PwLtQP97scc/UH7bNfS72kI/AAAAAAAAE7k/kyVwGcn-xO4/s1600/QL+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="108" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PwLtQP97scc/UH7bNfS72kI/AAAAAAAAE7k/kyVwGcn-xO4/s400/QL+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As Roxie begins to climb the ladder to infamy, Mama is there as her right-side woman, assisting and aiding her along side Billy for her appearances to the outside world. It seems as though, now, that Roxie has won over Mama -- though in one of Mama's defining beats, she betrays Roxie by handing over her personal diary to Velma to share with the world. Yet somehow, Latifah shows that Roxie is still one of the "chickies" in her pen and that she plays these kinds of games to maintain leverage with all parties. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uDUhnwYjKOg/UH7eDAdefvI/AAAAAAAAE8M/OrUdn3GmeUw/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-03h08m23s95.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uDUhnwYjKOg/UH7eDAdefvI/AAAAAAAAE8M/OrUdn3GmeUw/s400/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-03h08m23s95.png" width="400" /></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's in this quietly complex, contradictory nature that Latifah really find her footing in the role and most importantly, finds a person in a stock role, that in the words of director Rob Marshall, "Is a grand entrance with nowhere to go".The actress' accomplishment in the cliched role of Mama is being able to present Mama's powerful, mercenary intentions while still somehow making her appealing and likable, even as we catch on to her scheme. She maintains her humanity amid everything, and in her performance, Mama is a black woman in this time in the world whose merely trying to get by. She's silently aware of the demeaning stakes against her and uses "walls" for good use when she needs to.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ej2wZAwY_uI/UH7gI8jmY4I/AAAAAAAAE8U/dtclcWUyU_A/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-03h10m39s189.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ej2wZAwY_uI/UH7gI8jmY4I/AAAAAAAAE8U/dtclcWUyU_A/s400/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-03h10m39s189.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The role isn't much at all and after a little bit the movie seems to have little use for Mama Morton as something other than a device. Yet, (save for Zellweger's Roxie Hart) Latifah's Mama emerges as the only genuine character, one who lives beyond the stage the film keeps her confined to.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qNhUOuy2OWo/UH7hXBkYE8I/AAAAAAAAE8c/qLzQ8wmjZqI/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h18m15s34.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qNhUOuy2OWo/UH7hXBkYE8I/AAAAAAAAE8c/qLzQ8wmjZqI/s400/vlcsnap-2012-10-14-01h18m15s34.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Through the combined force of Queen Latifah's charisma, energy, and formidable presence in the role, Mama Morton emerges as something beyond what's required from this simple role. With a glimmer of humanity and a whole lotta personality, Matron Mama Morton becomes a memorably refreshing person where a mere cipher could of stood (see CZJ exemplify this soon...) and remains <em>Chicago</em>'s true best supporting actress.</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16641247936388386843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5325559607027589577.post-7493419406689963732012-10-14T10:52:00.000-07:002013-03-23T04:38:31.129-07:00If you have the chance, go and see...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">...</span><span style="font-size: x-large;"><strong>Pitch Perfect</strong><em>.</em></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-41mUONB1Zw4/UHr2OqPsvoI/AAAAAAAAE30/QYQPFGaENME/s1600/Pitch-Perfect-img-05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-41mUONB1Zw4/UHr2OqPsvoI/AAAAAAAAE30/QYQPFGaENME/s400/Pitch-Perfect-img-05.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It comes close to living up to it's title and you <em>won't</em> regret it.</div><br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16641247936388386843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5325559607027589577.post-31344709659314217452012-10-10T16:50:00.000-07:002013-03-23T04:38:31.135-07:00Just A Quick Question....Sorry for the delay on the last two remaining nominees from 1994 (I'm trying to get them on DVD/online -- if you have any links to them please let me know!). But after I do a surprise <em>Performance Profile</em>, I wanted to know what year you guys would be interested in seeing me do next; for me, it's between<strong><u> 1997</u></strong> and <strong><u>2002</u></strong>. I know I did '02 awhile back with a Smackdown, but I didn't do the profiles. So, if you have any preference let me know. When the quality of the film she's in might just be at root of one's beef with a winning performance. But then there can be times when many people as a collective group (ie. the whole film community) find it in their best interest to rally around any said performance that might just become too overpraised (ie. overrated) after a certain point and carry on so for years. Though this case is nowhere near as drastic as others, this sentiment holds slightly true for the highly acclaimed 1994 winning work of...<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MDi5HMaC1UY/UG27z6y8UZI/AAAAAAAAE0c/pzMtXN6BgK4/s1600/dianne.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="290" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MDi5HMaC1UY/UG27z6y8UZI/AAAAAAAAE0c/pzMtXN6BgK4/s400/dianne.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">...<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dianne_Wiest">Dianne Wiest</a> in <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullets_Over_Broadway">Bullets Over Broadway</a></em> (1994)</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Dianne Wiest plays Helen Sinclair, the once luminous, now aging Broadway diva whose looking for a comeback and finds one when caught in the awe-struck gaze of playwright David Shayne.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6_TzJdzZ0BY/UG29DV_0SwI/AAAAAAAAE0k/9-vJ32HbNC4/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-09-22-21h01m45s75.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6_TzJdzZ0BY/UG29DV_0SwI/AAAAAAAAE0k/9-vJ32HbNC4/s400/vlcsnap-2012-09-22-21h01m45s75.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Helen, from the start, is a creation spun from the spirit of Norma Desmond herself -- a high-strung, buzzing, highly theatrical, quick-witted, floozy, but captivating presence. She can land a line and time it with precise accuracy and stops short of tipping over the edge. Maybe it's the role, but Wiest's performance -- for all its strengths -- skips over past any emotional texture to be found in Helen Sinclair. But something wonderful happened when Mira Sorvino ably elevated both her role and film with her uncommonly intelligent performance of a rather unintelligible person. It's always fascinating to watch an actor spin something richer from a (possibly) thin, tepid role as written. Sorvino's subsequent career hadn't seen much more after <em>Mighty Aphrodite</em>, and its something of a loss when a talented, distinctive performer isn't given the right material (or any material at all) to work with after a big high. Such is the case with this next (surprise) nominee whose carved out a pretty interesting career for herself that still leaves us wanting more, much like her performance, the one given by...<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8-NmRSn01zk/UGfSYham2jI/AAAAAAAAEuE/T2FI9luO3mo/s1600/tilly+olive.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8-NmRSn01zk/UGfSYham2jI/AAAAAAAAEuE/T2FI9luO3mo/s400/tilly+olive.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">...<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennifer_Tilly">Jennifer Tilly</a> in <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullets_Over_Broadway">Bullets Over Broadway</a></em> </span><span style="font-size: small;">(1994)</span></div><div style="border: currentColor; clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rmCo4mtradw/UGf40JuiIAI/AAAAAAAAEuo/-c28o462WP4/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-09-22-20h42m06s64.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rmCo4mtradw/UGf40JuiIAI/AAAAAAAAEuo/-c28o462WP4/s400/vlcsnap-2012-09-22-20h42m06s64.png" width="400" /></a>Jennifer Tilly plays Olive Neal, an untalented, but eager chorus-line dancer in the roaring 1920's who has been waiting for her big acting break on the NY Broadway stage, as she believes, that's "where her gifts are".</div><div style="border: currentColor; clear: both; text-align: justify;">Olive also happens to be the moll/mistress/girlfriend of crime boss Nick Valenti who is funding an ambitious stage production by a desperate novice playwright named David Shayne (John Cusack doing his usual mannered, paranoid schtick) -- one who needs his show to go on at all costs.</div><div class="separator" style="border: currentColor; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DTD2-uX-jRg/UGi1V3cneQI/AAAAAAAAEvM/1SzoSsu9hXg/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-09-22-21h05m30s40.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DTD2-uX-jRg/UGi1V3cneQI/AAAAAAAAEvM/1SzoSsu9hXg/s400/vlcsnap-2012-09-22-21h05m30s40.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Olive and Nick take quick advantage of this unlikely situation and see it as the perfect opportunity to grab Olive a showcased role in the production as a breakout into the world of fame. Other times the performance falls below the overall greatness of a film (and can bring it down with them). But there are other times when performance and film can be totally and utterly in sync with each other in celluloid heaven, and with a radiant afterglow. This first nominee fits that last category to a T, and though I had (sloppily) profiled her awhile back, I realized she deserved better. Thurman imbues a kind of playfulness to the sequence, and let's us see that Mia enjoys the pleasure of being always one step ahead of the curious, but oblivious Vincent, despite the fact that she genuinely enjoys his company.</div><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lMZvbRVomY4/UGPgPbwi5wI/AAAAAAAAEqc/cEJS4eFWA1Y/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-09-23-03h11m10s226.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="170" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lMZvbRVomY4/UGPgPbwi5wI/AAAAAAAAEqc/cEJS4eFWA1Y/s400/vlcsnap-2012-09-23-03h11m10s226.png" width="400" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /> <br />As the conversation gets more and more into intimate territory, Thurman's Mia becomes more lucid and lively than ever before -- and though even with the aid of Tarantino's crackling dialogue -- Thurman is able to still keep Mia enigmatic. Thurman was simply born to speak QT's words (watch the joy of the <em>Kill Bill</em>'s for an extension of mastery on both the part of the actress and director), and here she handles the wordplay with a vivid immediacy, that lead to some excellent line readings. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YaQiHsBY9l8/UGPY2Sg0j3I/AAAAAAAAEp4/Xd646bdaY6Q/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-09-23-02h58m38s141.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="170" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YaQiHsBY9l8/UGPY2Sg0j3I/AAAAAAAAEp4/Xd646bdaY6Q/s400/vlcsnap-2012-09-23-02h58m38s141.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">With all that, the role seems simple enough for Thurman. Robinson is dismissive but "Bogart pours her a stiff drink, walks it over ... under gunpoint ... and gives it to her and says 'You deserve this'—it's just a great dramatic scene, [and] it's a wonderful use of a song in a non-musical picture. The cast around her are as stiff as planks of wood (in an even more direct contrast, the other main female character is Lauren Bacall's Nora, who gives the film nothing besides blank stares for the rest of the cast to (figuratively) smack flat against). And yet Trevor accomplishes the task of making Gaye not only interesting, but resonant -- she's the only character who gives off any interority and who has a rich emotional history/life well past the confines of both the role and the film. Giving the movie the closest thing resembling a human heart.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d7L4hYAhDIA/UFYObB7YNSI/AAAAAAAAEiM/v0x05by9a7E/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-09-13-23h43m59s70.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d7L4hYAhDIA/UFYObB7YNSI/AAAAAAAAEiM/v0x05by9a7E/s400/vlcsnap-2012-09-13-23h43m59s70.png" width="400" /></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">By simply texturing the flat, cliche stock role of a gangster's moll, Claire Trevor's performance as Gaye Dawn ends up feeling like the single person who <em>isn't</em> just another type, but someone who subtly anchor's and transcends a film that would of sunk had she not been around to be the real hero.</div></div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16641247936388386843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5325559607027589577.post-68881991281645283732012-08-21T13:01:00.000-07:002013-03-23T04:38:31.438-07:00Karen Carpenter<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IU7YZQ4fRrI/UDPo9fWo8KI/AAAAAAAAEcA/ZXq0ndzl-CA/s1600/karen+rocks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="233" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IU7YZQ4fRrI/UDPo9fWo8KI/AAAAAAAAEcA/ZXq0ndzl-CA/s320/karen+rocks.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JgXqmOY6KTI/UDPpEsmEbKI/AAAAAAAAEcI/DcmsU5vvFz4/s1600/karen+rocks+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="229" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JgXqmOY6KTI/UDPpEsmEbKI/AAAAAAAAEcI/DcmsU5vvFz4/s320/karen+rocks+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16641247936388386843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5325559607027589577.post-29051277461292539922012-08-20T08:54:00.000-07:002013-03-23T04:38:31.530-07:00Now & Then...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pq0ihJZQ_Wg/UDJdaUB5x0I/AAAAAAAAEbg/qDF-YYmcU9g/s1600/73a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pq0ihJZQ_Wg/UDJdaUB5x0I/AAAAAAAAEbg/qDF-YYmcU9g/s400/73a.jpg" width="316" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wQeyJNPTQ-k/UDJdq_XjoNI/AAAAAAAAEbo/iohxPgpnVOE/s1600/73b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wQeyJNPTQ-k/UDJdq_XjoNI/AAAAAAAAEbo/iohxPgpnVOE/s400/73b.jpg" width="316" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16641247936388386843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5325559607027589577.post-9124744348885282532012-06-24T00:01:00.000-07:002013-03-23T04:38:31.623-07:00Rocket Man...Jacob Rosenberg said the same thing about Charlie's eyes that there was real sadness in them. I may have accidently implied this. <br /><br />The dates that Charlie filmed Criminal Intent was from 22 Dec 03 & 14 Jan 04. An Executive Producer of the show was kind enough to give me these dates awhile back.<br /><br />The explanation is way too long but in a nutshell Charlie Rocket was already in a depressed state when he started filming Law & Order because he had been out of work for several months & was doing hard manual labour fixing his house. For the 1st few days he was still in a depressed state trying to get back into the acting routine but after 30 Dec 03 ( his blog entries were dated 29 & 30 Dec 03 ), my guess is he started to become well both physically & mentally as he worked in the latter 2 wks or so of the job. I have now seen this episode & am entirely satisfied ( after taking things into a/c ) that Charlie was going through a personal / private change in himself whilst filming this episode totally unrelated to the character he was portraying. If you see the episode more than once & concentrate on his face, eyes, hair & hands you will see what I mean. ( continuity is weird.....)<br /><br />& another thing his finger injury is most certainly real & is not part of the storyline at all.......<br /><br />He became depressed again the same wk it was 1st aired on US tv. Maybe he had seen himself & in his mind he didnt like how he had acted. It could just be a coincidence & something else may have set him off to write his blog entry on 20 Feb 04.<br /><br />Hope this is clear to everyone.<br /><br />yasmin<br /><span class="moreTextLink">... <a href="">Show more</a></span></div><span class="datePosted">4 years ago</span></div></li><li data-meta="{"commentId":"235815660","authorId":"70701669","totalCount":0}"><aside class="user"><div class="notification"><div class="chatDotWrap"><a class="chat" href="http://www.blogger.com/" title="♥Gladden Girl 4♥ is now online"></a></div><a class="msProfileLink miniProfile" data-miniprofile="{"friendId":70701669,"title":"♥Gladden Girl 4♥ ","onlineStatus":"\u003cspan class=\"MSIcon IMOfflineIcon\"\u003eOffline\u003c/span\u003e","addFriendButton":true,"gender":"Female","age":"Age: 49","notBand":true,"friendLite":true}" href="http://www.myspace.com/gladdengirl4"><img alt="♥Gladden Girl 4♥ " class="profileimage photo" data-friendid="70701669" src="http://a2.ec-images.myspacecdn.com/profile01/123/fd63dc1a47df4d4b947b38681fbd0c17/t.jpg" /></a></div></aside><div class="userComment"><div class="comment"><a class="msProfileTextLink" href="http://www.myspace.com/gladdengirl4" title="♥Gladden Girl 4♥ ">♥Gladden Girl 4♥ </a> This is truly a very insightful look into a man's soul. What can I say? Wells is just so smokin' hot in her five minutes of screentime, radiating a grounded, calm sexiness matched by a sweet, genuine, and appealing personality/disposition. Jennifer is the gorgeous dream girl for any guy, and it's Claudia Wells who gives her a realistic, timeless allure (with "timelessness" going back to the movie's central theme). That sounds cliche, but its so true. It's more than a classic, its even more than a landmark film, it's a part of the fabric of American (pop) culture/landscape. The movie has pulled off the trick of being so effortlessly appealing and charming -- yet it never simply coasts on either (though even if it did, it wouldn't matter much). It's so much of everything that I love about movies and about life, but I'll just continue on with my little tid-bits. Also, I will at some point in the near future, doing CineBites for <strong>Part II</strong> and <strong>Part III</strong> as well so look out for that.</span></span></div></strong><br /><div align="LEFT"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><strong><span style="font-size: large;"><u>First Bite:</u> <em>Why does it feel so short?</em></span></strong></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gFn1kdpYOQo/T5nfNQipYZI/AAAAAAAAEZk/bBgAawwXc2s/s1600/back-to-the-future-lock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="153" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gFn1kdpYOQo/T5nfNQipYZI/AAAAAAAAEZk/bBgAawwXc2s/s400/back-to-the-future-lock.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>It's real strange that a movie that's central focus is "time" seems so short on actual run-time the more I see it. A few months back, when I started getting back "into" the movies and watched all three in a row, I couldn't get over how quickly the first movie flew by. It's maddening in a way, because I love relishing in the atmosphere of the movie and it's frustrating when its running right by and I want to enjoy and savor every moment of it. It's paced beautifully -- sleek and elegant -- and I can't blame the light, brisk flow because that's just another refrehsing aspect of it. I always usually count the third act as starting when Marty explains to George what the plan for the dance is, as they hang up laundry, and I always think, "wow, we got here fast!". Maybe it's just that the narrative is so concise and tightly strcutured (without any fluff) that everything gets said in done in way that gets right to the point. What's even more odd is that this is the second longest of the three films, with Part III having two more minutes, and Part II feels the longest but is really the shortest. --- ??? Crazy...but I will say that the short-feel of the original is not a flaw at all (and is more satisfying if watched back to back with Part II).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><strong><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Second Bite:</u> <em>Claudia Wells as Jennifer Parker.</em></span></strong></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DRBD3mys8Bk/T5WAYuLKPGI/AAAAAAAAEYk/eZjIB_dwYys/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-04-20-00h14m48s104.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DRBD3mys8Bk/T5WAYuLKPGI/AAAAAAAAEYk/eZjIB_dwYys/s400/vlcsnap-2012-04-20-00h14m48s104.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CDpWi3aujC8/T5W24BJ-vSI/AAAAAAAAEY8/alISGblCU24/s1600/jennifer+parker.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CDpWi3aujC8/T5W24BJ-vSI/AAAAAAAAEY8/alISGblCU24/s320/jennifer+parker.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">(<em>Click on pic for enhanced beauty</em>)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><em><span style="font-size: large;">"How 'bout a ride mister?"</span></em></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Recently I have been kind of enamored with Jennifer Parker, or actually Claudia Wells <em>as</em> Jennifer Parker, in the role of Marty McFly's supportive girlfriend who's brief appearence at the beginning and closing of the narrative just adds another layer of awesomeness to the movie. Some might see it as simply enjoyable fluff, but I'm in the minority that it should be accepted within a serious film canon (along with <em>The Godfather</em> or <em>Citizen Kane</em> -- both of which are actually quite overrated and on a lesser tier than <em>BTTF</em>. Yeah, I said it). The lightness of <em>Back to The Future</em> shouldn't keep it from a higher status, as many other light comedies are held in higher regard (with some not so deserving), and especially considering that the film reaches and touches people on a universal level says alot, <em>and </em>considering that it is actually <em>more</em> than lightweight fun. Some might disagree with me here and say it has found its official place, but I'm not certain yet.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><strong><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Fourth Bite:</u></span></strong> <span style="font-size: large;"><strong><em>Stoltz (almost) as McFly.</em></strong></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gMHLMgav8nE/T5eFbg9GkhI/AAAAAAAAEZY/3clKDdCebIg/s1600/estoltz1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gMHLMgav8nE/T5eFbg9GkhI/AAAAAAAAEZY/3clKDdCebIg/s320/estoltz1.gif" width="184" /></a>We all know the story: Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly and seemed like an alright pick. But it's interesting to note that MJF was asked to play the part but couldn't due to time. Then about five weeks into shooting the director and screenwriter began to think they cast the wrong guy in the role of a teenage slacker who goes back in time, so after almost a third of the movie was shot, Stoltz was pulled out. And what a brilliant choice that was. I mean, really, can you imagine the role now being played by anyone except Michael J. Fox? With everything well into shooting you would think we would have been stuck with Stoltz for good -- also equally satisfying is that yanking Eric from the movie meant yanking Melora Hardin (Jan from <em>The Office)</em> from the Jennifer part, as she was too tall -- which we be just a double-negative;<em> no Fox</em>, <em>no Wells</em>?! No way! I hear tell that Stoltz's performance was too dramatic and heavy(!) -- ha, Marty's catchphrase! -- for the lightness and comic touch the part demanded. Even looking at the picture it feels...wrong. He's not a bad actor, just not right for Marty. (Also, Bob Gale says that the footage isn't being officially released because it makes him and Stoltz look bad? The story is legendary, and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nYvrS-jlcI&feature=related">some footage has been leaked</a> and I'm sure more will follow.)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><strong><u>Fifth Bite:</u></strong></span> <span style="font-size: large;"><strong><em>The marvelous music</em></strong></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iUAHzcgptn8/T5ogWlSGnII/AAAAAAAAEaA/k-0G6KiBuv4/s1600/bttf+music.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="196" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iUAHzcgptn8/T5ogWlSGnII/AAAAAAAAEaA/k-0G6KiBuv4/s400/bttf+music.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">What further elevates the movie is the charming, magical, joyful scoring done by Alan Silvestri, matched with the awesome songs like Huey Lewis (And The News) songs, <em>The Power Of Love</em> and <em>Back In Time, Earth Angel, Roll with me Henry, etc. </em> First with the score, it's just so (again, for the tenth time) appealing, with feeling and a sweet but powerful emotional hook. Whether it's Marty entering 1955, or Biff about to break George's arm, or Marty escaping from Biff's gang on a<strike> hover</strike>-skateboard while Lorraine and others watch in awe, the score is always right up to par, beat by beat. The Huey Lewis songs are so iconic now and both add a kind of flavor and energy to the film, as well as bookending it. They don't feel dated at all, really. One begins the film on a energy high note, and the other does the same for our exit as the DeLorean comes flying at us and into 2015. Among other 50s classics that further immerse us into 1955, Roll we me Henry is a fun counterpart to the elated sodashop scene and of course, the beautiful <em>Earth Angel</em>. Helping to further escalate the climatic moment and ending on a joyus and elated note, it always gives me the goosebumps; with George sealing the deal with Lorraine and Marty (and his hand) staying in time. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><em><strong>Of course, I have many more thoughts and things to say about the movie, but that might come in a review somewhere down the line, so I'll leave it at this. But a great entrance back into everything is thanks to Andrew, who is again hosting the blogathon for all things wet in cinema. Rain, mostly always used for dramatic effect, may sound cliche, but as a natural substance that might add (or be the center of) to a scene it almost always works.<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GMhMJy_x8j8/T5CWdkoN6dI/AAAAAAAAEXc/6CoRhPq2KsM/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-04-19-18h45m20s139.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GMhMJy_x8j8/T5CWdkoN6dI/AAAAAAAAEXc/6CoRhPq2KsM/s400/vlcsnap-2012-04-19-18h45m20s139.png" width="400" /></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For my contribution I have chosen a small scene from a movie that could be categorized as either a piece of crap or a masterpiece, with the general consensus leaning heavily towards the former. I, naturally, lean towards the latter. The scene blongs to <strike><strong><em>Water</em></strong></strike> <em><strong>Death Proof</strong></em>, Tarantino's most experimental film that has been critically lambasted (even by die hard fans) ever since it's release as part of the brilliant <em>Grindhouse</em> package five years ago. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The scene has rain adding to the lurid, down n' dirty, ominous atmosphere during the extended Texas Chilli Parlor sequence, where our cool, smooth antagonist tries to insinuate himself into the attention of the sexy girls hanging in the back porch of the bar.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v6hVlOBxTzI/T482Lnnp9PI/AAAAAAAAEWs/mn6S4zPsfe0/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-13h39m07s143.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="167" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v6hVlOBxTzI/T482Lnnp9PI/AAAAAAAAEWs/mn6S4zPsfe0/s400/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-13h39m07s143.png" width="400" /></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The first shot of the scene is of the clear, crisp rain splashing onto the pavement and cutting through the summer humidity.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QNjnvtCZSS8/T5CTqfgdmKI/AAAAAAAAEXM/71liJW9sRAM/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-17h58m49s17.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QNjnvtCZSS8/T5CTqfgdmKI/AAAAAAAAEXM/71liJW9sRAM/s400/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-17h58m49s17.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7-TbuwEPcI8/T5CUewNR-BI/AAAAAAAAEXU/GsAA1CmuS1c/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-04-19-18h39m50s95.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7-TbuwEPcI8/T5CUewNR-BI/AAAAAAAAEXU/GsAA1CmuS1c/s400/vlcsnap-2012-04-19-18h39m50s95.png" width="400" /></a></div>Jungle Julia is kickin' back with her long legs and feet exposed to the drizzle above her, letting the water slide down her lengthy leg, with Tarantino's ogling camera delighted with every second (as are we). This is one of the most erotic shots in the film, and in a film that centers around casul and unusual gratification, its saying alot. But the natural, free flowing rain blends perfectly with Julia's sexuality with she dangles and wear's on her sleeve -- and of course the next beat/shot of the camera following the rain down the whole length of her leg sets up (spoiler!) <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GsJ3wGsdTIU/T5CcetsEsiI/AAAAAAAAEYM/fFfmoeAFWqc/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-04-19-19h10m40s5.png">this shot</a>, where any control she had is now gone.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A7f7f9PU-A8/T5CX31L7RII/AAAAAAAAEXk/SkWOk28FXcA/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-17h59m25s163.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A7f7f9PU-A8/T5CX31L7RII/AAAAAAAAEXk/SkWOk28FXcA/s400/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-17h59m25s163.png" width="400" /></a></div>Though with this scene we have the contasting potency (rain, Jungle Julia) against impotency (Stuntman Mike) and its a contrast that proves soon to be deadly and something even deeper than mere sexuality. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YDz_gVwZ32o/T5CZre_J9aI/AAAAAAAAEX0/44W_R0eF8y4/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-18h23m24s227.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YDz_gVwZ32o/T5CZre_J9aI/AAAAAAAAEX0/44W_R0eF8y4/s400/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-18h23m24s227.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Mike makes a smooth introduction to Julia, who is intrigued somewhat by this old guy who still might have some cool left in him</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FNyzFZnyN5k/T5CaGBYAAlI/AAAAAAAAEX8/3DXqGCc4ypY/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-18h26m22s217.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FNyzFZnyN5k/T5CaGBYAAlI/AAAAAAAAEX8/3DXqGCc4ypY/s400/vlcsnap-2012-04-18-18h26m22s217.png" width="400" /></a></div>That is before the cool gets completely sucked out of him when he attempts to sneeze but just cannot seem to blow his, uh, nose. His face contorts itself into looking like something that happens when he <em>would</em> actually, well, you know. But of course<em> that</em> problem is what leads him to do what he does. It hasn't been too long but it feels like it. It's been the first week here of freshmen year of college, and so far it's been okay. Meeting new people (most of whom talk about consuming alcohol just as much as they actually consume it; I don't drink/smoke, so...), getting used to my new living environment (including finding privacy with two roommates who like to bring others in a lot), and classes (which aren't bad really at all). I'll keep it short and brief and save you guys of the inner workings of my would be journal! If you have any questions/comments about whatever, let me know. I'll post more about this later, but wanted to give you a mini update on me. As for everything else, I hope to find time to post frequently and to get back in the loop with you all.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16641247936388386843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5325559607027589577.post-30982235336028392602011-09-10T22:20:00.000-07:002013-03-23T04:38:32.466-07:00Name Dat Movie: #1<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--XVep_vqpYk/TmBF92fGnEI/AAAAAAAAEPY/zZRZENjkBMo/s1600/vlcsnap-2011-08-31-23h59m19s221.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--XVep_vqpYk/TmBF92fGnEI/AAAAAAAAEPY/zZRZENjkBMo/s400/vlcsnap-2011-08-31-23h59m19s221.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><b>Clue</b>: <i>May induce nausea.</i>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16641247936388386843noreply@blogger.com0
